As you see above, the League of Women Voters’ mission is Empowering Voters, Defending Democracy. Recently we’ve been asking about the state of our democracy in Florida and what that means for our future and that of our children and grandchildren. According to recent polls, most Americans — Republicans, Democrats, and Independents – believe that our democracy is in trouble. Many call it a full-blown crisis. The non-profit End Citizens United, dedicated to fixing our democracy by getting big money out of politics and protecting our right to vote, has scored democracy in every state. Florida has an overall grade of “D”; and they summarize, “Florida has one of the weaker democracies in the country…In the wake of the 2020 election, Florida has taken several steps to make the state more vulnerable to democracy subversion.” For these acts Florida scored a flat-out “F”.  Our experts will examine The State of Democracy in Florida and in particular:

• What has happened in Florida to weaken our democracy?
• What does history tell us about how democracies become autocracies?
• Can we expect the courts to protect the Florida Constitution as it has been construed by prior courts?
• What citizen rights are being and have been whittled away? and…
• What is the role of our League to protect our democracy?
