League leadership is ready to welcome you to this Saturday's Annual Program Planning Meeting.   We gather to discuss which issues we will focus on for the upcoming year and do so in an organized and democratic fashion.  Members, this is your CHANCE to voice your opinion, share your advocacy experiences and rally others to volunteer with you and others to confront our community's problems.

Where you at this weekend's rally for reproductive rights?  A supermajority in the FL Legislature plans to file an even more extreme abortion ban and it will take a massive effort to stop it.  Make your voices heard.  Contact elected officials and SPEAK UP for women's rights:

Register early!  We're expecting another big turn out for our annual celebratory program for Black History Month.  This year, it's presented by ASAHL, 2023 theme-Black Resistance.
"Black people have sought ways to nurture and protect Black lives, and for autonomy of their physical and intellectual bodies through armed resistance, voluntary emigration, nonviolence, education, literature, sports, media, and legislation/politics." ~ASAHL

The "Government Academy" is back and open for registration.  This 12 week program will cover ALL forms of government and is FREE. Keep scrolling to see the announcement from Commissioner Tony Ortiz with all info necessary for registration.
 
Florida
LWV of Florida has issued an ACTION ALERT: Urge Florida to Accept AP African American Studies! Presently, FL offers AP courses in European History, AP Japanese Language & Culture, as well as AP German Language and Culture, yet the course on AP African American studies is rejected. Click to use this link to an automated tool enabling you to send an opposition letter NOW.
Today's politics may motivate you to learn more about The Federal Negative:  "As Madison stated in a letter to Thomas Jefferson, “the effects [of the federal negative] would be not only to guard the national rights and interests against invasion, but also to restrain the States from thwarting and molesting each other.”
The Education Committee and Orange County Public Schools will host a special Harvard Civics Case Study on February 22.  Learn more about the event HERE and share this opportunity with your circle of friends and colleagues.  It's open to all who are interested but will require a bit of "homework" before the class.  Upon registering, you'll receive a link to prepare you for the upcoming class.
The National Popular Vote Committee has begun a statewide postcard campaign to legislators on the Ethics, Elections, and Open Gov. SubCommittee.  The goal is to get legislators to agree to "hear" the HB53 bill that Representative Mike Gottlieb filed, Agreement Among the States to Elect the President by Nat'l Popular Vote.
Senator Torres is expected to file the companion bill once again in the Senate.
