It was a triumphant return of Speakeasy with the League this past weekend.  A quick review from Susan Windmiller: "Kudos to the Global Peace Film Festival (headed up by Leaguer Nina Streich) & the League of Women Voters of Orange County, Florida with shoutout to Beth Coffey & Pat Grierson for bringing back SpeakEasy with two amazing films. Deciding Vote tells the true & little known story that was the precursor to Roe v Wade, of NY Assemblyman George Michaels 50 years ago, who changed his vote on legalizing abortion because “I have to stand for something.” And his vote cost him being re-elected, not to mention his law practice & standing in his Catholic conservative community. Amazing story. An example of moral courage. The second film, The Halls of Power, tells the powerful story of an inspirational young man, Elijah Manley, who runs for office. The odds are totally against him & yet, he does not give up. He runs and while close, he didn’t win. But the real story is one of character, integrity & dedication of this young activist."

The Post Secondary Education Outreach Subcommittee (Voter Services) helped celebrate Constitution Week at local colleges and universities. They hosted events at 4 Valencia campuses as well as UCF and Keiser University.

LEADING THE LEAGUE
 
The LWVOC has been accepted into Fall 2023 Cohort of Empowering Good!- a nonprofit community building project funded through the Rollins College Crummer School of Business and the Edyth Bush Institute. Tiffany Hughes, President, Lee Rambeau Kemp, Vice President and Karen Willis, Treasurer are excited to represent the League and to be a part of this 6 month organizational journey of learning, growth and capacity building.

The Natural Resources Committee invites all members of the League to attend a special program, "At the Intersection of Climate Change and Womens' Health" presented by OB/Gyn, Dr. Anna Lizama Clark. Learn more about the effects of a warming planet on the experience of motherhood.

In Orange County, we're building a multi-generational multi-racial League of Women Voters. The DEIA Committee invites you to join our TableTalk to share your ideas about meeting this goal.

We'll consider how we ensure that all feel welcome:
We'll ask ourselves what's working? What needs to change? Whose voice is missing?
We'll come up with an action plan for success.
