HOT TOPICS on RECESS until January

Hot Topics has had a very productive year; much of this we credit to the efforts of co-chairs Diana Smith and Karen Estrin, with attendance topping 200 for many programs.  It is on recess for December, as usual and will resume in 2025, January 8th.  The next Hot Topics zoom meeting will be Nov. 25 at 1:30 pm.  (See the calendar for the zoom link.)

Check out the RECAP here from this month's event How Florida Can Reduce Gun Violence including review and action steps.

POST ELECTION NEWS

LWV  VOTE 411

More than 9 million voters turned to vote411.org for election information, which is an extraordinary number. Details can be found at www.instagram.com/vote411/

LWVOC President Kathy Schmitz advises those who still have their vote411 yard signs to keep them or to return them to the League for storage until the next election which will be in March 2025!

Consider these facts from the 2024 presidential campaign as we move forward with the National Popular Vote:
--the candidates concentrated on 7 closely divided states to earn the necessary electoral votes (AZ, GA, MI, NC, NV, PA, WI)
--these states have a little less than 20% of the nation's population
--the rest, 80% of Americans ended up being spectators
LWV continues to support the NPVIC (National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.)  It's been enacted in 18 states and DC with 209 electoral votes; it needs 61 electoral votes to go into effect.

If you're looking for a fresh focus in 2025, consider joining our efforts!  National Popular Vote Committee
Another election?  Yes, in early 2025 there will be municipal elections in Orange County!

Can't think of it right now?  We understand...BUT, mark your calendar for Jan 2025 to check your status and if necessary, RENEW your vote-by-mail requests.

It's a quick turnaround for the March election which means ballots will go out 30 days before and that means you'll barely have one month to request that VBM ballot.

Thanks to former LWVOC Pres. Charley Williams for the reminder!
