Celebrating our League Volunteers reached a new height on Tuesday Dec. 3rd when the Democracy Defenders of Adopt-A-Precinct and Feed Our Precinct were recognized at a casual reception at CB Bistro and Jazz Club in MetroWest. AAP is a major revenue source for the LWVOC (literally tens of thousands of dollars) and couldn't be accomplished without the commitment of our members to donate their time and pay in service to the program.
Volunteer Recognition Committee members Saudi Ellis and Barbara Lanning worked in record time to put together a fun, festive, and fitting event for the AAP and FOP teams. Pres. Kathy Schmitz welcomed members and a special surprise guest, newly elected Supervisor of Elections Karen Castor Dentel and LWVOC member; she shared her appreciation of our efforts and plans for the reorganization and future of the Supervisor of Elections Office. AAP Coordinator Mary Montanus and FOP Anne Coppenhaver were feted for their many years of service to the program, and all 106 members of the AAP and FOP teams received certificates of appreciation and a commemorative button. Note: For those AAP and FOP members who couldn't attend, your gifts will be available at the following upcoming events: Holiday Party, January Hot Topics, and Annual Program Planning Meeting. Check out the celebration's FUN Photo Album HERE

Immigration: What is next for Central Florida?
Florida is at the forefront of immigration reform’s potential consequences. Join us for a critical discussion on the path ahead for Central Florida’s employers, their immigrant workforce, and the future of key industries, including hospitality, construction, and agriculture.
More details coming soon.

From a recent Orlando Weekly article  "The Sunshine State is home to the country’s third-largest population of undocumented immigrants — 747,000, as of 2022 — who contribute roughly $1.8 billion to the state’s economy through local and state taxes. Behind construction and agriculture, hospitality is the top industry employing the largest shares of the country’s undocumented workforce."

Statewide call to action: The League of Women Voters supports the Florida Right to Clean Water campaign, a citizens' initiative to amend the Florida Constitution with the right to clean and healthy waters. If our current laws were working, then we wouldn’t have manatees dying in record numbers, 80% of our 1000 springs impaired, and harmful blue-green algae and red tide in greater frequency and duration. A constitutional right takes precedence over legislation that permits pollution, restricts fertilizer bans, and allows radioactive materials to be used in our roads. Create a legacy for the future of our waters!

The Right to Clean Water! In support of establishing our basic right to clean and healthy water, LWVOC has committed to helping get this citizen initiative on the 2026 ballot. Please sign your own petition. Those who signed prior to 2024 will need to sign the new petition.
