The Annual Planning Meeting is approaching quickly, and it's going to be unlike any other! We're taking advantage of this "general" non-election year to have some in-depth conversations about how we can "up our game" and become even more effective in our advocacy work and as an organization. We want to hear your ideas and share ours! This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the League's mission,
meet other members, and discover how you can make a difference in your community. If you've been considering getting more involved or even joining, this is the perfect time! Register today at Program Planning Meeting [Members should log into system first to register] and be part of the conversation!

My first nine months as your president have served to make me even more passionate about strengthening the League's impact in our community. That's why I'm actively involved in developing my leadership skills. One way I'm doing this is by participating in the newly revised Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership offered by the Edyth Bush Institute. This program will offer me a review of foundational elements as well as insight into what makes a sustainable nonprofit in today’s world. These skills will be instrumental in leading our League towards a vibrant future.

Additionally, I'm delighted to be participating in the Florida League Leadership Program. We just had our January session that focused on "Getting to Know Your State League."  It covered fascinating topics such as how legislative priorities are set and important resources available to local leagues. I'm excited to share a condensed 30-minute presentation highlighting the key insights from this session. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Florida League, and non-members are welcome! Registration is helpful. There are two sessions to accommodate various schedules: Thursday, JAN 23 from 12-1 pm and Tues, JAN 28 from 7:30-8:30 pm. I’ll do the same after the National League presentation next month.

I look forward to all we can do together in 2025! Join us at the Annual Planning Meeting and let's shape the future of the League together!

Yours in Service,
Kathy

From ASALH, the founder of Black History Month (Association for the Study of African American Life and History): "Black people’s work has been transformational throughout the U.S., Africa, and the Diaspora. The 2025 Black History Month theme, “African Americans and Labor,” sets out to highlight and celebrate the potent impact of this work."

Statewide call to action: The League of Women Voters supports the Florida Right to Clean Water campaign, a citizens' initiative to amend the Florida Constitution with the right to clean and healthy waters. If our current laws were working, then we wouldn’t have manatees dying in record numbers, 80% of our 1000 springs impaired, and harmful blue-green algae and red tide in greater frequency and duration. A constitutional right takes precedence over legislation that permits pollution, restricts fertilizer bans, and allows radioactive materials to be used in our roads. Create a legacy for the future of our waters!

The Right to Clean Water! In support of establishing our basic right to clean and healthy water, LWVOC has committed to helping get this citizen initiative on the 2026 ballot. Please sign your own petition. Those who signed prior to 2024 will need to sign the new petition.
