Betty Anne Staton – 1925 – 2020
Betty Anne Staton, a historic LWVOC leader, died December 27 at age 95. She had been an LWVOC member for 64 years.
“Betty Anne was an icon in the League of Women Voters,” said Joan Erwin, co-chair of the LWVOC History Committee. “Her leadership helped blaze the trail our LWVOC has followed to encourage good government and community service. We are grateful she chose to devote much of her life to the League.”
Staton was born Nov. 8, 1925. She joined her local League Aug. 1, 1956, when it was still named the Winter Park – Orlando League of Women Voters. She was a lifetime member, the second-most senior living member in terms of service.
She served as local League president, 1964-66, and Florida League president, 1971-73. In 1975, Florida Gov. Reuben Askew appointed her to the Florida Board of Regents.
Among milestone issues during her leadership tenure were voter services, constitutional reform, education, and justice reform. She worked closely with governors and other leaders on a number of landmark issues, including judicial reform and governmental ethics.
During her leadership years, the League sponsored two amendments to the State Constitution, on court reform and the initiative provision.
