Hot Topics Examines What steps are Being Taken, June 14

 

ORLANDO, Fla. (May 18, 2023) — The League of Women Voters of Orange County, Florida hosts its premiere “Hot Topics” series on Wednesday, June 14, “Give Me Shelter: Innovative Solutions to Our Housing Crisis” at 11:30 a.m. at the Winter Park Events Center, 1050 W. Morse Blvd in Winter Park. The League of Women Voters wants to know: Is there any hope that this problem can be alleviated?  The panel will discuss long-term solutions to our local housing crisis that affects renters of all ages and income brackets.

Low wages, a shortage of apartments and rising rents create a perfect storm for workers, their families and others who live on fixed incomes. What is being done long-term to provide the kind of communities where people can live? The panelists will provide examples of two innovative solutions to housing and how they work with the community and local government.

 

Moderator is Beth Kassab, Central Florida native and journalist who has devoted her career to local news. She has a passion for telling the stories of the people and organizations who help define this region. Beth spent 20 years at the Orlando Sentinel.

 

Panelists include: Terry Prather, a founding board member of Lift Orlando, a community development organization that strengthens neighborhoods so people can thrive;  Ryan Von Weller, Chief Operating Officer at Wendover Housing Partners and an MBA graduate of Rollins College and responsible for Wendover’s multi-family and residential development throughout the state of Florida; and Mitchell Glasser, Manager of Orange County’s Housing and Community Development Division, is responsible for administering Orange County’s federal, state, and local housing programs.
