On Sunday, Oct. 4, a coalition of advocacy groups is joining forces to honk, yell, and decorate their cars to put on a large caravan showing the bi-partisan support for these Orange County Charter Questions!

Registering voters at a large apartment complex,12 - 4pm, 5826 PGA Blvd, Orlando, 2-4pm slots are filled, still need volunteers for 12-2pm, and one volunteer will need to pick up the Voter Registration kit, COVID PPE and plexiglass shield from the Storage Unit.

Registering homeless and underinsured citizens at 232 N. Orange Blossom Trail, Orlando, 8am - 12pm;
We need one volunteer for the 8am shift to pick up the Voter Registration toolkit COVID PPE and plexiglass shield from the Storage Unit the day prior, as the event starts at 8am

This week's webinar will feature Tony DePalma, Director of Public Policy for Disability Rights Florida. Tony will speak on voting with a disability and some of the practical considerations that must be made in the midst of our current public health crisis.
Discussion: What challenges do people with disabilities normally face when it comes to voting? What challenges have been added to the already existing issues due to the pandemic? What are the best ways for the League to ensure people with disabilities are treated fairly when trying to vote?

| | | The Orange County Regional History Center announces a landmark exhibition Yesterday, This Was Home: The Ocoee Massacre 1920 that examines the largest incident of voting-day violence in United States history. The exhibition marks the centennial of the event---once hidden history in Central Florida--and will be on display from Oct. 3, 2020 through Feb. 14, 2021.

Join us for our special exhibition-opening event, highlighting the importance of voting and civic engagement to American democracy. Our “Warriors for Democracy” story shines at History Center
If you visit the Orange County Regional History Center to see the landmark exhibition titled Yesterday, This Was Home: The Ocoee Massacre of 1920, take a few minutes to soak up the women’s history on display in the area outside the exhibition gallery.
Along with ten posters from the Smithsonian titled Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence, you’ll find four Warriors for Democracy posters, full of pictures and rich information from our very own LWVOC women's story. Click HERE to see posters on our website.
The History Committee is grateful to the museum’s chief curator, Pam Schwartz, for inviting us to add a local dimension to the Smithsonian display with our own story of persistence. Our panelists will include Charter Review Commission members and those with specific knowledge of the underlying issues. Our Co-President, Gloria Pickar, will serve as moderator and she will guide discussion with panelists including Kay Hudson, Angela Melvin and Carol Fogelsong.

LWVOC endorses three Orange County Charter Changes
After intense study of the issues and merits of the proposals, the League of Women Voters Orange County strongly endorses and recommends voting YES on the 3 Orange County Charter questions on the November 3rd ballot.

Distinguished author Martha S. Jones will be the keynote speaker at the 2020 Jerrell Shofner Lecture Series on Florida History and Culture. This year’s lecture will take place virtually on Monday, October 12 from 6pm-7:30pm and focuses on “The Right to Vote: Women and Race in the 1920 Election.“
Jones is a professor of history and the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor at Johns Hopkins University, A legal and cultural historian whose work examines how Black Americans have shaped the story of American democracy, Jones’s latest book, Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Fought for Rights for All, was released this year. The book explores the epic history of African American women’s pursuit of political power and how it transformed America.

| On Friday, Oct. 2, the film Us Kids, directed by Kim A. Snyder, will be screened in MLK Jr Park (Comstock & Denning). The film follows youth leaders determined to take the reins and fight for justice. Sparked by the plague of gun violence ravaging their schools, “Us Kids” chronicles the March For Our Lives movement over the course of several years.
