Tune in tomorrow to see the League in action!

The Government Committee was asked for the third time to moderate a Winter Park Candidate Forum and the Winter Park Library specifically asked the committee to moderate its forum for the two mayoral candidates; we're pleased to accommodate them.  The entire event will be virtual.  Carol Foglesong will be the moderator, assisted by Caroline Emmons-Schram for question clarification, and with Jan Little as timer.  The event will take place Friday, 2/26, from 11am – 12 noon.  Questions for the candidates may be submitted to events@wppl.org.  Watch on www.facebook.com/WinterParkPublicLIbrary. Forum is to be recorded and should be available for viewing after the actual event via the Library’s FB page.

Join author and WLRN journalist, Amy Green on March 10th for a conversation to coincide with the publication of her new book, Moving Water The Everglades and Big Sugar.  She will be interviewed by Gabbie Milch, former Co-Chair of the Natural Resources committee. Described as an "engrossing expose" and "political storytelling at its best" the conversation is sure to enlighten about Florida's unique environmental treasure.

Envision yourself in a leadership role for 2021-22. Sometimes, it's forgotten that MEN play a huge role in our leadership as shown above!  We've even had a male president, Charley Williams.  Check out our current Board and consider adding your name for consideration.

Looking for a way to volunteer from home to keep the rest of us informed about what is happening in local government?  One of the important functions of the LWVOC is sending observers (mostly virtual now) to monitor local governments around Orange County and report on what they are doing.  Learn more about our Government Observer Corps HERE and consider applying.

MORE than a Zoom meeting, this is an experience with break-out groups and discussions that are profoundly impactful.
SAVE the date!  On MAR 11 at 7:00 PM, our new DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) Committee will present a Racial Wealth Gap Simulation.
Some of you were able to participate in one of these last autumn for Hot Topics.  Due to its popularity and effectiveness, we are offering it again. REGISTER HERE:  Racial Wealth Gap Learning Simulation - 3/11/2021

"A DEI lens is a way of examining a program, a process, a product, etc with regards to how it is perceived by a variety of communities, voices, and perspectives, and what, if any, barriers may exist that are preventing it from being equitable or inclusive of everyone." MARCH is Women's History Month:  Join us on March 18, noon via Zoom
Show your support for defending democracy and the importance of telling women’s stories at this second annual Women’s History Month celebration, presented by the Orange County Regional History Center and LWVOC.
This year’s honoree, Mabel Norris Reese, fought for justice and civil rights in Lake County at the helm of the Mount Dora Topic, as she investigated the case of the Groveland Four and the instances of grave injustice. Speakers include our own Jackie Brockington and Co-President Gloria Pickar.
Tickets are $25 and benefit the Historical Society of Central Florida. Register at thehistorycenter.org/event/womens-history-month-celebration/
A limited number of scholarships are available for students and others. Email Amanda.Henry@ocfl.net

And speaking of women's history, a beloved member passed earlier this month....  In Memory of Jeanne Elizabeth Grierson, our member who turned 100 last year, poignantly coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment and the National LWV's 100th birthday.  Her involvement with the LWVOC for the past several years, alongside her daughter Pat will be a special remembrance for all of us.

Read more about Jeanne HERE and also find her recognition on our  Member Highlights page.
