We're highlighting local heroine and former League member, Vinnie Cannady, this week as we celebrate Women's History Month.
Vinnie Cannady passed away last September yet her legacy of service to her community will live on; including the countless local groups that she participated in, she was also a member of the LWVOC including our History Committee. "She's one of the most effective neighborhood leaders in central Florida and it sprung from her deep love and profound concern for her neighborhood," Clayton said.
Clayton runs the Orlando Union Rescue Mission, helping the homeless. He first met Ms. Vinnie five years ago when the two clashed over where the new mission should be built."

This week's webinar will feature Carolina Lopez of America Votes. We're excited to welcome Carolina back, some may recall we spoke with her following the November election. Carolina will join us this Friday to discuss the harmful legislation that is attempting to change voting in Florida ( SB 90). The legislation changes the frequency needed to request a mail-ballot and eliminates vote-by-mail droboxes.The League is actively fighting this legislation. Our belief is that it is a blatant attempt of voter suppression. We'll be using our Lunch & Learn platform to dive deeper into the horrible bill and discuss next steps.

This year’s honoree, Mabel Norris Reese, fought for justice and civil rights in Lake County at the helm of the Mount Dora Topic, as she investigated the case of the Groveland Four and the instances of grave injustice. Speakers include our own Jackie Brockington and Co-President Gloria Pickar.

This free even tis a first come, first seated event. When you arrive, you will be assigned to your own socially distant box for up to 5 people.
Watch the inspiring true story of how Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols pioneered the NASA recruiting program to hire people of color and the space agency’s first female astronauts in the late 1970s and ’80s.
The actress transformed her sci-fi TV stardom into a real-life science career when, in 1977, she started a campaign to bring diversity to NASA—creating the company Women In Motion, Inc. and recruiting more than 8,000 African American, Asian and Latino women and men.
Nichelle was credited by NASA for turning it into one of the most diverse independent agencies in the United States Federal Government. She and her program continue to influence a younger generation of astronauts, too—including Mae Jemison, the first female African American astronaut in space.
Along with Nichelle Nichols, Woman In Motion features celebrities, activists, scientists and astronauts including Neil deGrasse Tyson, George Takei, Pharrell Williams, Martin Luther King III, Al Sharpton, Vivica A. Fox, Walter Koenig and more.
