“The League of Women Voters has long supported local government independence,” notes Barbara Lanning, co-president of the Orange County League. “We chose preemption and its impact on home rule for our local governments as the subject of our May Hot Topics to help our members and the public better understand  this important issue."
Shown above (l. to r.) panelists include policy advocate Ida Eskamani, Commissioner Tony Ortiz with moderation provided by Aubrey Jewett

This week's webinar will feature former Leon County Supervisor of Elections Ion V. Sancho.
We're welcoming former Supervisor Sancho to discuss the impacts of the recently passed restrictive elections bill (SB 90).
As many of you know, the League believes the bill’s sweeping changes will undoubtedly make it harder for Floridians to cast their ballot, with a disproportionate impact on elderly voters, voters with disabilities, students and communities of color.
Agenda:
Discussion: What were the final measures that made it into SB 90? What impact will the bill have on the typical voter? How can the League help mitigate impacts on various communities?
Q&A Session with Supervisor Sancho and Patricia Brigham

Perhaps you've tuned in recently to events geared toward stopping the hate against AAPI.   LWV statement

"The League stands in solidarity with AAPI communities. We are committed to listening to and amplifying AAPI voices and educating ourselves on the historic and ongoing systemic racism that plagues this country so that we can be better allies.

“We urge our followers to do the same, and to call on elected and appointed officials at all levels of government to demonstrate their commitment to keeping ALL communities safe. There can be no liberty in the face of racist and xenophobic violence.”

Enjoy celebrating the community's heritage in May as well as standing against hate against AAPI.
