The League of Women Voters of Orange County has a history of more than 80 years in this community as an activist, grassroots organization whose members believe citizens should play a critical role in advocacy.  We do not endorse or oppose political candidates or parties at any level of government.  Our advocacy positions are based on the merits of each issue, after careful study and consensus.

Yesterday's Hot Topics on Affordable Housing is now up on our YouTube Channel   If you missed this powerful discussion with our esteemed panel, tune in to learn more about the possibilities and challenges that face Central Florida renters and homeowners, exacerbated by the continuing pandemic.  Shown top above, l. to r. --Donna Dyson, Moderator and Camilo Parra, panelist.  Bottom l. to r. panelists, Rev. Mary Lee Downey and Chris King

"This issue almost requires a D-Day type solution," said Chris King.   "Our crisis is not only rooted in eviction...as the market increases, they are not renewing their leases...we're going to see people with nowhere else to go," from Rev. Downey.  "There's a pay-to-play system...the one word that might help is mediation...where outside of the courts they can hopefully reach some settlement," Camilo Parra speaking of the plight of homeowners facing eviction and loss of property.

The Board of LWVOC is creating a new Events Committee to plan and execute our amazing  community events.  The LWVOC board feels that having a committee of volunteers dedicated to managing the logistics of our events would enrich the events and make the process more efficient.

The new Events Committee is a Strategic Committee that will collaborate with Advocacy Committees for all events. Advocacy Committees will provide the content while the Events Committee will provide event planning and logistics in order to host streamlined, high quality events. Examples of the events that the LWVOC hosts include Hot Topics, Speakeasies, workshops, a holiday party and annual membership and planning meetings.

This is where you come in! We are hosting a brief, Event Planning Interest Meeting on Tuesday, September 14th at 6:00 pm via Zoom for members who are interested in assisting with all aspects of event planning and execution.

Whether you have an event planning background or just want to help the LWVOC shine, we need you! Please register today.

This week's webinar will feature a conversation surrounding a report produced by the League of Women Voters of Tallahassee's Public Education Task Force investigating Step Up for Students, a private SFO (Scholarship Funding Organization), that manages and promotes Florida’s expanding voucher program with little oversight. Step Up for Students is one of the largest charities in the United States that few have heard of.

*This week, we draw attention to Bruce Chapin, a champion of justice in his own right while supporting the history-making career of his wife, Linda, our own warrior for democracy.
We extend our deepest condolences to longtime LWVOC member and leader, Linda Chapin, upon the passing of her husband, Bruce Chapin. "Bruce met his wife Linda while they were both working at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. They recently celebrated 56 years of marriage. Both have been active in civic and community affairs and have balanced careers while also raising four children."
