The League of Women Voters of Orange County has a history of more than 80 years in this community as an activist, grassroots organization whose members believe citizens should play a critical role in advocacy.  We do not endorse or oppose political candidates or parties at any level of government.  Our advocacy positions are based on the merits of each issue, after careful study and consensus.
Last week, LWVFL President Cecile Scoon met with League members as well as grassroots partners.  She shared valuable insight about recent happenings in Tallahassee as well as her own story on the path of advocacy.  Much appreciation goes to League volunteers, Pat Grierson and Darlyn Jimenez for organizing the morning's coffee and Saudi Ellis, Nancy Nix and Joan Erwin for their help in the evening.  
The TOTS team has assembled an impressive list of grassroots partners and this helped solidify their relationships.  Our hope is that working together with these groups will multiply our efforts to carry out our missions of voter registration and turnout as well as education on the candidates (through VOTE411) and other community issues.  Event Photo Album

There's still time to take advantage of this opportunity to add a Harvard Case Study to your professional experience or personal development.
The LWVOC and OCPS are partnering again with Harvard University for a case study. Topic:  "Martin Luther King and the Struggle for Black Voting Rights."  To participate in this endeavor, you will be required to download the provided material upon registration and be ready to discuss the prepared questions/materials.  Click HERE for more details and register HERE for MAR 30 Case Study.

This month, March, marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Harriet Tubman, and it is fitting that the League of Women Voters of Orange County is shining a light on the contributions of women who were trailblazers in fight for women’s rights. This month, we're featuring Ida B. Wells, Susan B. Anthony and Carrie Chapman Catt, three amazing women who helped pave the way for equal rights for women. If you have not already done so, you also have the opportunity to honor one of these inspiring women by choosing a special membership category named in their honor as a Warrior for Democracy. Today we feature Susan B. Anthony, shown below.

Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947), namesake of one of the Orange County League’s special membership categories, was a visionary suffragist who created the national League of Women Voters on Valentine’s Day 1920, shortly before women won the vote in August that year.

Catt envisioned a grassroots organization dedicated to the belief that educating citizens plays a critical role in democracy; she saw the League of Women Voters as a path to help women use their new power to help shape public policy. This League would empower voters and defend democracy. It would advocate for legislation and educate for citizenship. Carrie Catt was determined that the League of Women Voters would always be above partisan divisions, “a semi-political body, . . . nonpartisan and all-partisan.”
