“Local newspapers play a critical role in our communities, making us all stronger and more engaged citizens. Newspapers are dedicated to keeping you informed. Whether it is a local issue or a worldwide pandemic, they are there to provide consistent news coverage that you can trust.” Jim Fogler-CEO, FL Press Assoc.

Scott Maxwell enlightened us yesterday at Hot Topics about the fate of newspaper bureaus across the county, state, and nation.  Click HERE to learn about an initiative that supports community journalism beyond a subscription.

Record-breaking!  Yesterday's sell-out Hot Topics luncheon program had 250 registered—the highest in the Orange County League’s history.  Barbara Liston has written a review HERE of the event and you can also watch it on our YouTube channel.  Set your calendars now because next up are the popular local Judicial Candidate Forums for July and August.  Have you noticed that judges in Florida and across the nation are continually in the news?  Prepare your questions, register for the luncheons, and expect another HOT program at the Winter Park Events Center, our new home for Hot Topics.

Congratulations to our LWVOC Leaguer Jennifer Adams on her LWVFL appointment!
Jennifer Adams has been appointed to fill the position of LWVFL Program/Advocacy Chair. This position aids in executing the League's adopted program. The state program, which is adopted biennially at state League conventions, helps shape day-to-day advocacy work.
Adams also currently serves as an elected director on the LWVFL Board, LWVFL Juvenile Justice Chair, and as a Vice President of the LWV of Orange County.
"For Jennifer, life’s challenges have been surmounted through a combination of determination, believing the best in people, resourcefulness, and being an influential agent for positive change with a servant leader mindset. As Executive Director of Florida Community Partnership, an industry leader in the creation of innovative legislation, policy, community engagement, and implementation framework methods, Jennifer strengthens efforts to develop solution-focused best practices for successful outcomes to complex initiatives."  Read more about Jennifer on our Board of Directors page.

Board Member Opening
We have regretfully accepted the resignation of Shan Rose as Treasurer effective immediately who has filed to run for HD41 and as you all know from your close reading of the Bylaws and Policies & Procedures, she is no longer eligible to serve as a result.
Share your financial expertise as our new Treasurer.  We have experienced former Treasurers who are ready to help you transition into that role.
LWVOC is starting a podcast.  We're first starting with interviews of members and non-members related to voting. Some of the questions will be related to the first time you voted, thoughts about voting, why you vote, etc.  Our hope is to launch the first episode by the end of June.
The podcast will move on to other topics of interest to the club as we progress through the year.

Any questions, or if you want to volunteer to be interviewed, please reach out to Susan Baxter at baxtersc@gmail.com
