We're FALLing for our fabulous League volunteers....  They've had a busy week closing out summer celebrating Constitution Day-Sept 17 and Nat'l Voter Registration Day-Sept 20 with voter registration tables, Vote411 prep, attending community events/committee meetings preparing for the upcoming Nov 8 election.  They completed the herculean task of collecting campaign signs, educating the community through Hot Topics about the Transportation penny sales tax referendum, and countless other tasks that we don't see or hear about but without their efforts, our goals for empowering voters would not be met.  So thank you, League volunteers!  Here's a few pics from their recent activities at GOTV (Get out the Vote) Collegiate Style and our best efforts to identify everyone (top-bottom L-R):

What’s Happening?

Voter turnout in the 2022 Primary Election was 22.0% in Orange County. Not a great showing! People have gotten disengaged in the process and think their vote may not count. Low voter turnout is a result. Election Results and Turnout | Orange County Supervisor of Elections (ocfelections.com)~NPV, National Popular Vote  Deadline to Register or Change Party Affiliation--OCT 11

Are you excited about the election--or worried? As women (and men who value women) November 8th is as much about us as the candidates running for office. Women make up 51.1% of the population. Almost 10 million more women than men voted in 2020. Women are a powerful super majority--without equal rights. Women power democracy--without an equal seat at the table.

Get fired up to get out the vote! Rev your engines by attending Hot Topics October 12th with your colleagues to discuss how women's rights have been trampled and why the ERA is the right path to full citizenship for women. It's essential that we add the ERA to the US Constitution to guarantee women's rights and claw back what we had for the last 50 years. Join the march. Register now!
Warriors for Democracy
What person or group do you believe has been a Warrior for Democracy this past year? In a time when democracy is being challenged on many fronts, who has gone above and beyond to defend democracy in Orange County?

Our first honoree was then State Senator Geraldine Thompson for her challenge of the Governor's appointment of an unqualified candidate for the Florida Supreme Court.
You now get a chance to select the next awardee!

Event Recaps
SEPT 20--The League was honored to be part of an event to honor National Voter Registration Day, organized by NALEO Educational Fund at the Orange County Supervisor or Elections office. The event brought together a diverse coalition of leaders from the Latino, African American, Muslim, Asian Pacific Islander, Jewish, Christian, Haitian, Faith Based Communities. Featured speakers were Jackie Colon, Southeast Regional Director, NALEO Educational Fund, Honorable Bill Cowles, Orange County Supervisor of Elections, Honorable Chris Anderson, Seminole County Supervisor of Elections, and Honorable Alan Hays, Lake County Supervisor of Elections. The Seminole SOE registered his 17 year-old son who will turn 18 before this election which was very exciting.
For the League every day is voter registration day, but it was great to celebrate this special date with so many groups who share our belief in the power of voting.  Co-President Barbara Lanning shown left with SOE Bill Cowles and Leaguer Carmen Torres shown right-center with other attendees.

Attention:
Community event running through Sept. 25
The 20th annual Global Peace Film Festival runs from September 20 - 25 with screenings in the Winter Park Library and at Rollins College.  The GPFF uses films as a catalyst to inspire and educate people to initiate positive change in their local communities and worldwide. As former LWVOC President Charley Williams has said, “The GPFF is like a week of Hot Topics.”
Highlights include “American River” about the Passaic River in New Jersey; “The Big Payback” about the tax-funded reparations bill in Evanston, IL; “My So-Called Selfish Life” about women’s bodily autonomy; and “Anonymous Sister” about the ravages of opioid addiction.
Information at peacefilmfest.org. The week of local screenings is followed by a week of virtual screenings from Sept. 26 - Oct. 2.
