Event Recaps
The autumn New Member Orientation enthusiastically introduced members and guests to our various committees along with a short history of LWVOC.  Much appreciation goes to our dedicated Leaguers-Membership Committee who organize this twice yearly event.  Thanks for the dinner and vino! An impassioned crowd attended yesterday's HOT TOPICS: 21st Century ERA at the Winter Park Events Center.  From Barbara Liston's review:  "All of the constitutional requirements have been fulfilled to add the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. So why hasn’t it happened?" Cont. reading HERE

Make Every Vote Count:  How to Restore Fair and Trusted Presidential Elections

Before all the votes are counted Nov. 8, we will all be talking about the 2024 Presidential election and the issues around that election.

Two of the last four presidents took office even though they lost the popular vote. It doesn’t take a constitutional amendment to fix this; National Popular Vote and Electoral Count Act legislation can.  In fact, we are 72% of the way to accomplishing the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.  And when Mitch McConnell supports the Electoral Count Act, that may be on track.

Warrior in Action
Longtime Leaguer Adrienne Katz Katz, a founder of our LWVOC Speaker's Bureau was recently featured at the UCF LIFE (Learning is for Elders) program which has approximately 800 members. Ever the professional, Adrienne said, "I was apprehensive about how the audience would respond to joining in the "I am Woman" lyrics, but it was gratifying to hear them.  I had an appreciative crowd around me when it was over."

Warriors for Democracy
What person or group do you believe has been a Warrior for Democracy this past year? In a time when democracy is being challenged on many fronts, who has gone above and beyond to defend democracy in Orange County?

Our first honoree was then State Senator Geraldine Thompson for her challenge of the Governor's appointment of an unqualified candidate for the Florida Supreme Court. You now get a chance to select the next awardee!
Nominations extended til OCT 23.
