How will local leaders respond to federal deportation aid requests?

Staff | Published on 1/9/2025
What would Orange County do if requested for aid in conducting ICE raids?  Has the county administration discussed a response? This question is more appropriate for law enforcement. To date, Orange County has not been requested by the federal or state governments to participate in any way during Immigration enforcement efforts by the Trump administration. We would have to comply with the law in either case.

Thank you.

Sheriff Mina:

Immigration enforcement is a complex and challenging issue for communities and law enforcement agencies throughout the United States.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is steadfast in our commitment to arresting dangerous criminals and others who pose a threat to public safety. To fulfill that mission, we depend on the cooperation of victims, whether they have legal status or not, in solving a wide array of crimes. That is why it is imperative to the safety of the entire community that people can come forward as victims of or witnesses to crime, regardless of immigration status.

Detention based on existing immigration detainers is primarily a responsibility of the jails, and in Orange County, the Sheriff’s Office does not run the jail. That is done by the Orange County Department of Corrections.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has always been, and remains ready to collaborate with state and federal partners to identify thoughtful, effective solutions to this complex and challenging issue.

Thank you,
