The Honorable [Insert first name last name]

[Florida House or Florida Senate]

[Office address]

Dear [choose either Representative/Senator insert last name]

My name is [insert your name] and I am a member of the League of Women Voters of [insert local chapter]. I write to you as a constituent from [insert your city / county]. I am writing to you to urge you to oppose efforts to redraw congressional districts outside of the decennial process.

Floridians voted for fair districts in 2010, and mid-decade redistricting goes against the will of the people. It undermines voter trust, destabilizes trust in elections, and distracts from the real issues Floridians are facing like property insurance, housing affordability, and health care.

Voters should choose their elected officials, not the other way around. Please protect our State Constitution and the voice of Florida voters by rejecting mid-decade redistricting.

Thank you for your service and consideration.

Sincerely,

[insert name]

Talking Points

Guidance on using these talking points effectively:

  • Pick 2–3 core points you feel comfortable with, and say them in your own words.

  • Stay focused on the big picture: fairness, stability, and protecting voters’ rights.

  • Keep it simple and clear: Legislators and neighbors should walk away understanding exactly what we stand for.

Who We Are

  • We are members of the League of Women Voters.

  • The League has been around for more than 100 years with a nonpartisan mission: empowering voters and defending democracy.

  • The League has been working for fair districting since 1939 and in 2010 we were a prime member of the Fair Districts coalition working to pass the Fair Districts Amendments.

Our Main Ask for Legislators

  • No to mid-cycle redistricting. Floridians voted for fair districts in 2010. Redrawing lines now for partisan advantage goes against the will of the people and our State Constitution.

Supporting Messages You Can Add

  • Cost of Living Connection

    • Florida’s families are worried about urgent issues such as skyrocketing insurance costs, housing, and infrastructure. Taxpayer dollars should be spent on fixing these problems instead of unnecessary redistricting.

    • The last redistricting process cost taxpayers millions of dollars. We don’t need to waste precious state resources on an unnecessary and partisan mid-decade effort.

  • Fair Districts

    • In 2010, Florida voters passed Amendments 5 & 6, also called the “Fair Districts” Amendments, to stop partisan gerrymandering.

    • The State Constitution specifically states that “Congressional districts or districting plans may not be drawn to favor or disfavor an incumbent or political party.”

    • Redistricting mid-decade, without new Census data, ignores the will of the voters, undermines the State Constitution, and flies in the face of our democratic principles of fair voting.

    • Frequently changing district lines confuses voters and weakens the relationship between communities and their elected officials. Floridians deserve to see and comment on proposed maps before a single line is changed.

  • Dangerous Precedent

    • Allowing mid-decade redistricting sets us on a path of endless political map-drawing.

    • This would erode confidence in elections, create instability, and make it harder for voters to have consistent representation.

Easy to do!  We'll be posting graphics daily to remind our followers to "Say NO to Mid-Cycle Redistricting" and you can add any of the captions below to your social media shares.

How to Use These Captions

Here are sample social media posts you can copy, paste, and share on your own League Facebook and Instagram accounts, as well as your personal ones. Here’s how to use them:

  1. Pick a caption you like from the list. Feel free to make your own. If you do, keep it short and concise.

  2. Pair it with a graphic (use League branding, a simple voter image, or even a personal photo).

  3. Post it on your social media — Facebook, Instagram, or both! If you still use Twitter, go for it!

  4. Add hashtags and tag your legislator, if possible. This helps your message reach more people and shows lawmakers their constituents are paying attention.

Sample Captions

  1. Mid-cycle redistricting is a waste of taxpayer dollars and an attack on voters. Contact your legislator today and say NO to partisan maps. 🗺️ #FairMaps

  2. Democracy works best when voters choose their leaders, not the other way around. Urge your legislator to reject mid-cycle redistricting. 🗳️ #DefendDemocracy

  3. Florida families are struggling with rising costs. Ask your legislator to focus on real issues, not wasting millions on partisan redistricting. 💸 #FairMaps

  4. The people voted in 2010 to amend our State Constitution to prohibit drawing districts to favor a party or candidate. Remind your legislator to uphold the State Constitution and stop partisan gerrymandering. 📜 #FairMaps

  5. District maps are supposed to be drawn every ten years. The last ones were just drawn in 2022. Now the Tallahassee power brokers are trying to rig new districts in favor of their party. Frequent map changes cause voter confusion and weaken trust. Tell your legislator to protect stable, fair districts. 🔒 #FairMaps

  6. Democracy is stronger when it’s stable. Join us in urging legislators to keep maps fair and nonpartisan. #FairMaps

  7. Partisan redistricting erodes confidence in our elections. Speak up: contact your legislator and demand fair representation. 📣 #FairMaps

  8. From the Panhandle to the Keys, Floridians want fair maps and fair elections. That does not include a mid-decade rigging of the maps. Make your voice heard and call your legislator today. 🌴 #ProtectTheVote
