Sentinel series could teach Bush a lesson

In reading former Gov. Jeb Bush’s commentary in Sunday’s Sentinel (“Families deserve school choice. Reject union lawsuit”) it became very clear that he dismissed or never read the Sentinel’s 2023 series, “Schools without Rules,” about private-school accountability.

In supporting school choice he claimed that student performance improved “because we embraced school accountability, transparency and, above it all, choice.” Had he read the Sentinel’s series perhaps he would understand why so many people have issues with the special treatment charter and private schools receive from our legislators. When so many charter and private schools were found to have hired unqualified and non-degreed teachers, and are not required to administer and report the same standardize test results as public schools, where is the accountability? Where is the transparency? If charter and private schools want a piece of the same “pie” they should be held to the same standards and publicize the results so that parents can make an informed choice.
