If you're seeing signs popping up for "Judge" campaigns, but you're unsure who to vote for, our upcoming July 10 Hot Topics will help answer your questions.  And if you're wondering about the judicial primary itself, here's a short answer:

"Candidates will square off in the Aug. 20 primary. If there is no majority winner, the top two finishers will face each other in the general election on Nov. 5. Terms are for six years, and Florida law requires judicial elections to be nonpartisan. According to the Florida Bar, both county and circuit judges are trial judges. County judges hear criminal misdemeanors with possible sentences of up to one year in jail and civil cases where the disputed amount if $50,000 or less. Circuit judges hear criminal felonies, domestic relations, juvenile matters, probate issues and civil cases where the amount is more than $50,000."

It's Time for us to Pay Democracy Her Rent
Orlando Sentinel Op-Ed by former LWVOC President, Charley Williams
"The Fourth of July is our chance to reflect upon our nation’s genesis and its Founding Fathers, who brought their newly minted democracy onto the world stage. It is a participatory democracy. “We the People” is the mantra for our popular sovereignty.
Each of us has a duty to keep the American experiment thriving, relevant and healthy. As child advocate Dr. Marian Wright Edelman noted, each of us needs to pay civic rent or service for the privilege of living in this country. She cast it as a duty, “not just something you do in your spare time.”
Democracy is fragile. If we fail to “pay the rent” by not showing up to cast an informed ballot, our participatory democracy will wither and fail."

LWVOC attended the Delta Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated’s Black Business Expo at the Dr. JR Smith Neighborhood Center in Orlando. Shown above left is League Volunteer Sara Howard with Event Organizer Cheryl Rouse and with AKA member and Leaguer (right center) Kitty Woodley and an AKA volunteer. Other League volunteers included Linda Dalton, Melinda Wright, and Gail Ridgeway.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Special Alert!  The Voter Services team is fielding multiple requests for Leaguers to "table" at community events with voting information.  These are typically very informal such as festivals, holiday celebrations, expos etc. (yes, that's some of their team having fun above ) but do require volunteers who are comfortable engaging with the public and answering basic voting questions as well as re-directing queries to appropriate web sites for voter registration and FAQs.  The VS (Voter Services) team will TRAIN you and it's easy to share a passion we all have...educating voters!  Click on the committee link above or reach out to our Co-Chairs if you'd like to learn more:  Kathy Sheerin or Gina Hall
