Having just attended the National Convention of the League of Women Voters, my mind is swirling with possibilities. There was so much more than League business.
    We got updates on efforts to abolish the Electoral College as well as the steps being used until that day, called the National Popular Vote (check out our sub-committee NPV here.) The LWV’s One Person One Vote campaign is helping to move us in the direction most American want, ensuring that future US presidents are elected by direct vote of the people.
     Some of us arrived early to lobby our senators and representatives for support of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This legislation will bring the original voting rights act of 1965, up-to-date and ensure its relevance in the world we live in today.
     We had the opportunity to hear Kim Teehee speak. She is the Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Cherokee Nation. A compelling speaker, lawyer, activist, and former advisor to President Obama, Teehee shared with us the struggles that the Cherokee and others have faced in securing the representation guaranteed in their treaties honored.
     There were, of course, excellent workshops, national business, and opportunities to get to know others from across the country – all working to Empower Votes and Defend Democracy. There is nothing like 1,000 new friends to provide energy and inspire hope!

When is the last day to request a VBM (Vote-by-Mail) ballot for Aug 20 Primary? Please note this corrects last week's post (which was taken from an erroneous OC Election FB post) that the LAST day to request a Vote-by-Mail ballot is actually AUG 8, by 5PM. Sorry for any confusion but happy to see the update! Click HERE to request a ballot.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Special Alert!  The Voter Services team is fielding multiple requests for Leaguers to "table" at community events with voting information.  These are typically very informal such as festivals, holiday celebrations, expos etc. but do require volunteers who are comfortable engaging with the public and answering basic voting questions as well as re-directing queries to appropriate web sites for voter registration and FAQs.  The VS (Voter Services) team will TRAIN you and it's easy to share a passion we all have...educating voters!  Click on the committee link above or reach out to our Co-Chairs if you'd like to learn more:  Kathy Sheerin or Gina Hall
