SOE Karen Castor Dentel Speaks at April 9 LWVOC Annual Meeting
Recently Elected Supervisor of Elections for Orange County
Supervisor of Elections Karen Castor Dentel will speak at the League of Women Voters of Orange County’s annual meeting on April 9 and is expected to talk about initiatives during her first 100 days and how the office is moving forward on elections.
Doors open at 10:30 a.m. at the Winter Park Events Center for a buffet lunch. The speech starts at 11:45 a.m. at 1050 W. Morse Blvd. in Winter Park, and the business meeting will take place after Castor Dentel’s speech and a question-and-answer period. Tickets are $30 for League members, $37 non-members.
Castor Dentel was elected Nov. 5 and started her position in January. According to a March 12 press release from her office, Castor Dentel’s top priority was the recovery of $3.2 million in funds distributed by former Supervisor of Elections Glen Gilzean to various groups for scholarship, training, voter registration and education programs. A report issued by Orange County Comptroller Phil Diamond said 51 percent of the office’s annual budget was spent in two months. Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said he thought Gilzean’s distribution of money was improper.
While the financial recovery was significant, Castor said there was still work to be done. “While we are not whole yet, these funds have allowed us to settle significant outstanding bills, ensuring that the office can catch up with its financial commitments while maintaining the integrity of our election operations,’ she said in the release. “This recovery is an important step, but there is more work to be done to ensure the long- term financial health of the office.”
According to Castor Dentel’s biography on the website, she is a lifelong Floridian who has spent more than 25 years serving Orange County as a public school teacher, state legislator and school board member. She represented her community in the Florida House of Representatives from 2012-2014 and the Orange County School Board from 2018-2024.
Castor Dentel’s speech will be streamed live on the League’s Facebook page Facebook and an edited version will be available later on the League’s YouTube channel, League of Women Voters Orange County - YouTube.
