Subject: LWVOC Newsletter & Events
From: Lisa Adkins

Leaguers, we are resending this newsletter as we’ve been made aware that it did not successfully go through on Thursday due to the ongoing website issues.

It's been an exciting first week of summer and although you may be busy with the season's activities, there's A LOT happening in our local, state, and national governments. Our committees still meet regularly and mostly via Zoom so be sure to check out our events below and sign up to join them.

With important decisions being made now about VBM (Vote-by-Mail) ballots and their dispersal via the USPS, you can still be involved...even if it's on your phone lounging by the pool! Vote‑by‑mail is a lifeline for many voters. A new USPS proposal could block ballots from being delivered in some states.
Make your voice heard by July 2.

OPINION ESSAY by Kam Shenai, reposted from 6/22 Orlando Sentinel
Headlines brag that 62% of Americans own stock. For most working people, that “ownership” sits locked inside a retirement account they cannot touch for decades. A market boom adds numbers to a screen. It doesn’t help them buy a tank of gas today.

We have split America into two different economic worlds: the asset economy and the wage economy. If you live in the asset economy, where wealth grows through stocks and investments, a booming market lifts you up. But look at the actual numbers: the wealthiest 10% of households own 93% of all stock market wealth. The top 1% alone owns more than half. The bottom 50% of Americans? They own just 1%.

The DEIA Committee Social Justice book club discussion of the data driven book, “Homelessness Is a Housing Issue” by Gregg Colbert and Clayton Page Alden is about the underlying causes of homelessness and the need to stop judging those who aren’t housed as failures. The group spoke of systems and structures that prevent the availability of sufficient housing resources. The group included League members, Gina Hall, Val Mobley, Joan Erwin and Virginia Meany and Carla Cox from the Christian Service Center. The discussion next month will focus on the Orlando area. Join us by contacting Virginia Meany..
Voter Services participated in a recent “Dorm Storm” event where they tabled with voter information for students moving into the dorms for summer semester. Lee Rambeau Kemp, Lynn Nelson and Margo Hamel were there Sunday to welcome students and provide information about registering, changing addresses, ID requirements, Vote411, etc. Other organizations who also tabled were People Power, Engage Florida, Youth Action Fund, and Planned Parenthood. Visit Volunteering opportunities and take part in a Dorm Storm this fall!
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!
